The Conversion Strategy: RISE with SAP

June 27,

To ensure businesses don’t jump ship to cloud competitors like Oracle NetSuite or Microsoft Dynamics during this mandatory migration, SAP bundled the transition into a managed services vehicle called “RISE with SAP1.”

Instead of treating the cloud move as a messy IT upgrade, RISE wraps infrastructure, cloud hosting (hyperscalers like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), business process redesign tools, and system maintenance into a single subscription contract. It fundamentally shifted SAP’s business model from lumpy, upfront software licenses to predictable, highly lucrative recurring cloud revenue.

Embedded AI as a Core System

Rather than tacking AI on as a gimmicky chatbot, SAP is embedding Business AI directly into standard day-to-day transactions. For instance, in their latest cloud releases, they’ve launched domain-specific AI agents (like the Accounts Receivable Agent) that proactively crawl financial records, analyze payment variations, write automated customer follow-ups, and flag compliance risks without human prompting.

Summary of the Current Market Era

Ultimately, SAP became a leading brand not just by building software, but by becoming the undeniable digital backbone of global trade. By forcing the market to drop legacy on-premise customizations, they are successfully converting traditional corporate giants into lean, AI-driven, cloud-native machines.

The strategy was risky, but it has effectively shifted the role of an ERP from a passive “system of record” to an intelligent, automated “system of execution.”
